Off-duty St. Louis officer shot; two men charged

Updated 2:02 p.m. March 23:

Christopher Gales and Montez Thomas, both 18, have been charged in relation to the case, according to a release from the St. Louis County Police. Their photos are above.

Both men have been charged with the following:

  • 1 count of Assault in the First Degree,
  • 1 count of Robbery in the First Degree,
  • 1 count of Burglary in the First Degree and
  • 3 counts of Armed Criminal Action.

Gales and Thomas are being held on $500,000 cash-only bonds.

Updated with information from Mayor Slay at 5:27 p.m:

A tweet from St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay this afternoon gives an update on the officer's condition:

"Our wounded police sergeant is in stable condition, being treated for injuries. #fgs"

The #fgs designation indicates that it was the Slay himself who tweeted the update.

A St. Louis police officer is hospitalized after being shot while apparently interrupting a burglary at his home.

Police say the officer was off-duty when he discovered the home invasion Thursday afternoon. He was shot in the stomach.

The office was conscious and breathing at the shooting scene. His condition was not immediately known.

Authorities are searching for suspects.
